Flagpoles in Maine

Portland offices, Bangor hospitals and schools, mill-town main streets and the whole Downeast coast. Maine is the northern end of what we cover, and the footing here goes deeper into the ground than anywhere else we work. One quote covers the pole, the foundation, the flag and the labour.

Wind here. Wind is not what decides a pole in Maine. The design figure barely moves across the state: about 115 mph at the Kittery corner, which is the highest mapped figure here, around 110 mph through Portland, Lewiston, Augusta, Bangor and the Downeast shore, about 105 mph across Aroostook and near 100 mph in the St. John Valley. What moves is the ground. The footing has to sit below the frost line, the town publishes how deep that is, and the number runs from four feet on the coast to five feet and more inland. On much of the shore the hole stops on ledge long before it gets there. Permitting is the other Maine peculiarity: the state code covers every building here, but only towns above four thousand people are required to enforce it, so in most of Maine nobody will issue you a permit and the code is still yours to meet. The shaft is usually the simple half of a Maine quote. The hole and the paperwork are the half worth talking about.

• The York County corner — About 115 mph at Kittery, York and Ogunquit, and that is the highest mapped figure in the state. Standard wall covers most of it, so what costs money at this end of Maine is the depth of the dig and the finish that stands up to salt.
• Greater Portland and the Midcoast — Around 110 mph from Cape Elizabeth through the city and up past Rockland and Camden. Moderate on paper, but wharf and harbour frontage has nothing upwind of it and gets sized as open exposure, which puts the wall thickness back up.
• The interior valleys — Around 110 mph through Lewiston, Augusta, Waterville and Bangor, on ground the hills already shelter. The frost line runs deeper here than on the coast, so the line on the quote that moves is the concrete below grade.
• Downeast and the far north — About 110 mph at Bar Harbor and Eastport, easing to about 105 mph across Aroostook and near 100 mph in the St. John Valley. Fog sits on this coast for weeks at a time, so anodized finish and stainless or bronze hardware go in as standard. Inland it is frost, snow and ice on the halyard that set the job.
