What we do in Rochester

How tall, for a Rochester building

The hospital and university campuses run 35 to 40 ft, because a pole standing in that much lawn needs the height to register from the road at all. Monroe County facilities and the district schools take 30. East Avenue, Park Avenue and the Corn Hill streets take 25, where the houses stand close to the pavement under a heavy canopy.

Flagpoles in Rochester

A university and hospital city built either side of a river gorge, with the optics and imaging trade that replaced the film business still behind a good deal of it. We cover Rochester and the Monroe County area, including the High Falls district and the Genesee gorge, the East End theatre district, Park Avenue, Corn Hill, Grove Place, the Neighborhood of the Arts, the University of Rochester, and Rochester Institute of Technology out at Henrietta.

Wind here. Rochester sits in an inland, gorge-cut area, which works out to roughly 115 mph under the code your town uses. That figure decides how wide and how thick the pole has to be, so we check it against your address before we quote. The Genesee cuts through the middle of Rochester in a gorge with waterfalls in it, and that is the local oddity: a site on the rim has open air on one side and a wind that runs up the cut, so it is treated as open ground rather than as a sheltered city street. Away from the river this is drumlin country, glacial till and gravel, which augers cleanly on one lot and hits cobbles on the next, so we would rather look at the ground than guess at it. Lake Ontario is seven miles north and puts about a hundred inches of snow on the city most winters. That is more a flag problem than a pole problem: a flag flown right through a Rochester winter is a consumable, and a second one costs less than flying a tired first one into March.

Most of the people who call us from Rochester are hospital and medical campuses, university and college buildings, instrument makers and manufacturers, city and county facilities, schools, churches, veterans posts and downtown offices.
