If you price commercial construction, section 10 75 00 has probably cost you an evening. It is one line in a spec book, it is a flagpole, and turning it into a number means matching a paragraph of technical language against a manufacturer catalog you may never have opened.
Here is what that section is actually telling you, line by line.
What section 10 75 00 covers
CSI MasterFormat organizes construction specifications into divisions. Division 10 is Specialties, and 10 75 00 is the subsection for flagpoles. If a project has a flagpole in it, this is where the architect describes it.
Some spec writers use 10 75 16 for ground-set poles and 10 75 23 for wall-mounted. If you see those numbers, you are in the same territory.
The variables that set the price
Nine details in that section determine which pole you are actually buying. Miss one and you quote the wrong product.
1. Height
Written as a nominal exposed height, usually 20′-0″, 25′-0″, 35′-0″ and so on. Exposed height means above grade, not total shaft length. A ground-set pole has additional length buried in the foundation.
Price is not linear with height. A 50 ft pole can cost four or five times a 25 ft pole, because taller poles need thicker walls and larger butt diameters.
2. Butt and top diameter
The butt is the widest point at the base, the top is the narrowest at the truck. A spec might read 7″ butt, 3-1/2″ top. These numbers, along with wall thickness, are what separate a standard pole from a heavy-duty one at the same height.
3. Wall thickness
Often given as a decimal such as .188″ or a gauge. Thicker wall means higher wind rating and higher cost. If the spec calls out a wall thickness your standard series does not meet, you need the deluxe or heavy-duty version.
4. Halyard type
The single biggest cost driver after height. External runs the rope down the outside to a cleat. Internal conceals it inside the shaft behind a locking access door. Specs may say concealed, vandal resistant, or reference a winch system — all of those mean internal.
5. Finish
Satin is the mill standard. Clear anodized, dark bronze anodized, and black anodized each carry an upcharge, and the jump is meaningful on a large pole. Watch for references to AA-M12C22A31 or similar — that is an anodizing specification.
6. Wind load rating
Usually stated in mph, often 90 mph, 110 mph, or 130 mph, sometimes with and without a flag flying. Coastal and high-wind regions require heavier poles. This can push you into a different series entirely.
7. Mounting method
Ground set means the pole sits in a foundation sleeve. Shoe base or surface mount means it bolts to a prepared pad. Wall mount and outrigger are their own products. The spec should say which.
8. Sections
Poles above a certain height may ship in two sections for freight reasons. Two-section construction typically carries an upcharge over one piece.
9. Trim package
Ball or eagle ornament, truck assembly, cleat, retainer ring, flash collar, halyard rope, snap hooks. These are usually listed as included accessories but occasionally called out separately.

What the spec will not tell you
Three things routinely bite estimators:
- Foundation work. The pole manufacturer supplies foundation requirements, but the concrete, excavation, and sleeve setting are almost always by others. Confirm who is carrying that.
- Signed and sealed engineering. Many jurisdictions require PE-stamped drawings for the pole and foundation in the project state. That is a separate line item and a separate fee.
- Lead time. Not in the spec, but it will hold up your certificate of occupancy if you get it wrong. Ask before you submit.
Quoting it in practice
A workable process:
- Pull the height, halyard type, and finish first. Those three get you 80 percent of the way to a price.
- Check wind load. If it is above 90 mph, verify the standard series still qualifies.
- Confirm mounting method and section count.
- Ask whether engineering is required.
- Get freight, because a 60 ft pole is an oversize shipment.
If any of that is missing from the documents, ask the GC. An RFI is faster than guessing wrong.
