What we do in Cambridge

How tall, for a Cambridge building

Kendall Square laboratory and office frontage runs 30 to 35 ft; those buildings are broad and flat-fronted and they need that much to be answered. Harvard and MIT campus poles sit at 30 ft, which is what it takes to lift the flag clear of the trees over the walks. Harvard, Central and Porter Square retail, and the brick apartment blocks behind them, read best at 20 to 25 ft.

Flagpoles in Cambridge

Two universities with a laboratory and biotech district built on top of them, and squares of low brick retail in between. We cover Cambridge and the Middlesex County area, including Harvard Square and Harvard Yard, the MIT campus along Memorial Drive, Kendall Square, Central and Porter Squares, Brattle Street and Tory Row, Cambridge Common, Alewife and the Charles River basin.

Wind here. Cambridge sits in an urban, riverside and partly filled area, which works out to roughly 120 mph under the code your town uses. That figure decides how wide and how thick the pole has to be, so we check it against your address before we quote. Cambridge reviews more of its own fabric than most cities its size. Alongside the Old Cambridge and Fort Washington historic districts there are conservation districts over Mid Cambridge, Avon Hill, Half Crown-Marsh and Harvard Square, each with its own commission, and the questions there are about height and finish rather than the shaft. The ground either side of Massachusetts Avenue is not the same ground: Kendall Square and the MIT campus stand on filled Charles River marsh, so a footing there is designed rather than augered, while Brattle Street and Avon Hill are ordinary glacial till and dig easily. The last constraint is overhead. The street trees along Brattle Street and around the Common are old and low, and a flag that catches a branch is finished inside a season, so on those streets the pole goes where the flag has clear air rather than where the sightline would put it.

Most of the people who call us from Cambridge are university and laboratory buildings, biotech and technology offices, private and public schools, hotels, churches, city facilities and condominium associations.
