What we do in Hot Springs

How tall, for a Hot Springs building

In front of the bathhouses, 20 to 25 ft is as much as Central Avenue will carry, and that height is settled with the Historic District Commission before anything is ordered. Oaklawn, the hotels and the hospital campuses take 30 to 35 ft on their own ground, where there is room to stand back from a pole and look at it. Lakefront sites on Hamilton and Ouachita look out over a long stretch of open water, which is nothing like the sheltered valley the town sits in, so they are sized for what is actually in front of them rather than for a Garland County figure.

Flagpoles in Hot Springs

A spa and tourism city wrapped around a national park, with a racetrack, two large lakes and a hospital and retirement base behind it. We cover Hot Springs and the Garland County area, including Bathhouse Row and Central Avenue, Hot Springs National Park, the Pleasant Street historic district, Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort, Whittington Avenue, Lake Hamilton and Lake Ouachita and the Highway 7 corridor.

Wind here. Hot Springs sits in an inland, Ouachita valley area, which works out to roughly 105 mph under the code your town uses. That figure decides how wide and how thick the pole has to be, so we check it against your address before we quote. Central Avenue is the hardest street in Arkansas to put a pole into. Hot Springs Creek was sealed under a masonry arch in 1884, about 3,500 feet of it in front of Bathhouse Row, and the creek still runs there beneath the pavement, so nothing is dug on that frontage until we know what is under the exact spot. The national park boundary comes up to the street on the east side, which is a jurisdiction to check rather than an obstacle. Exterior work in the Central Avenue and Pleasant Street districts needs a certificate of appropriateness from the city's Historic District Commission before a building or sign permit follows. Off the avenue you are in the Ouachitas, where the rock runs to shale, chert and novaculite, and novaculite is brittle and hard enough to slow a core drill right down, so the hole is priced after we have seen the site rather than before.

Most of the people who call us from Hot Springs are hotels and bathhouse properties, restaurants and Central Avenue retail, the racetrack and its hospitality buildings, hospitals and clinics, churches, city and county buildings and lakefront homeowners.
