Resort and convention frontage in the south, the Capitol and the Truckee Meadows in the north, and a lot of open desert between them. Pole, foundation, flag and labour come back as one number, worked out for the figures your own building department uses.

Wind here. Nevada runs the opposite way to what people expect. Las Vegas and Henderson are the gentlest ground we work on anywhere: the Southern Nevada Amendments put 98 mph in the table and set Exposure C unless the applicant makes a case for something else, so in the south it is the sun overhead and the caliche underneath that decide a job, not the wind. Go north and the figure climbs to about 115 mph across the Great Basin, through Elko, Fallon and most of Lyon and Storey counties. Reno, Sparks, Carson City and the Washoe and Douglas county ground around them are higher again, and for a different reason: the national map marks that country a special wind region, which means it declines to give a figure at all and the local amendment writes one in. That figure is 120 mph, and it arrives with two feet of frost line and a severe weathering rating the south does not have.

• The Las Vegas Valley — 98 mph, Exposure C, and no special wind region in any of it. A standard wall is normally right, so the money goes into the finish and into getting the hole open rather than into the shaft.
• The Colorado River corner and the southern desert — The same figure through Boulder City, Laughlin and Mesquite, on flat ground with nothing upwind of it. Sun and blowing grit are what finish a pole off here, which is why anodized comes up long before wall thickness does.
• The Great Basin interior — About 115 mph through Elko, Fallon and most of Lyon and Storey counties, although Fernley is written up at 120. Moderate on paper, but every site out there is genuinely open and gets sized that way whatever the county figure says.
• The Truckee Meadows, the Carson Valley and the Sierra front — A special wind region, so the map gives no number and the Northern Nevada Amendments set 120 mph instead, the highest in the state. Add two feet of frost line under the Truckee Meadows and Carson City, and a winter that gets into the fittings, and both the footing and the hardware cost more here than they do in the south.
