Wind here. New Mexico has the flattest wind map of any state we work in. The state writes its own building code from the 2021 international codes, and the basic design speed behind it is about 105 mph from Shiprock to Hobbs and from Raton to the border, so the shaft that suits Las Cruces suits Taos. What does change across the state is height above the sea. Las Cruces sits at about 3,900 ft and Santa Fe at about 7,000, and thin air at that height puts far more ultraviolet on a finish and a flag than 105 mph ever will. Add the spring dust season, which takes the edge off both, and what settles the specification here is sun, grit, ground and the local review board rather than the wind figure. One practical point: outside the larger cities it is the state's Construction Industries Division that issues the permit, not a city hall.

• The middle Rio Grande — About 105 mph from Espanola down through Albuquerque and Belen to Socorro, which a standard wall carries at most heights. Getting a truck to the hole and getting the drawing past a city that reviews it is the work here, not the wind number.
• The northern mountains and the Four Corners — The same 105 mph at Santa Fe, Taos, Los Alamos and Farmington, and the map is the least of it. Snow and ice on the rope and the pulley, and hard sun at 7,000 ft, are what wear a pole out, so stainless hardware and an anodized shaft are worth the difference.
• The eastern plains and the Pecos valley — 105 mph on paper at Clayton, Clovis, Portales and Roswell, over ground that is flat to the horizon in every direction. With no shelter anywhere, those sites are sized for exposure, which asks more of the wall than the figure does. The Pecos valley adds gypsum underground, so the hole gets looked at before the concrete is ordered.
• The southern desert and the border — 105 mph again from Las Cruces across to Deming and Lordsburg. Spring dust is what costs money down here. It scours a mill finish and ends a flag early, so anodized is the sensible specification and flags get replaced sooner than a new owner expects.
