What we do in St. Louis

How tall, for a St. Louis building

On the Hill, in Soulard and around Lafayette Square the streets are narrow and the houses are brick two floors up, so 20 to 25 ft is what looks right in front of them. The hospital and university buildings through the Central West End and around Cortex settle at 30 to 35 ft. Downtown, along Market and Washington, 35 to 40 ft: those blocks are tall enough that the pole has to reach before the flag registers at all.

Flagpoles in St. Louis

An independent city of brick and limestone with its downtown on the Mississippi, a medical and university belt running west, and a county of established suburbs wrapped around all of it. We cover St. Louis and the St. Louis City and St. Louis County area, including downtown and Gateway Arch National Park, Laclede's Landing, Soulard, Lafayette Square, the Central West End, the Hill, Cortex, Forest Park and the Delmar Loop, and Clayton and Kirkwood out in the county.

Wind here. St. Louis sits in an urban, Mississippi riverfront area, which works out to roughly 110 mph under the code your town uses. That figure decides how wide and how thick the pole has to be, so we check it against your address before we quote. St. Louis is not in a county. The city separated from St. Louis County in the 1870s and has run its own building and preservation departments ever since, so a job on one side of the city line and a job two blocks away in Clayton or Maplewood are two sets of paperwork and two inspectors. Inside the city, work in a local historic district is measured against that district's own written standards before the Building Commissioner issues a permit, with the Cultural Resources Office administering it and the Preservation Board hearing appeals. Underneath, the city stands on limestone, and there is old cave passage in it under the south side, so what an auger finds in Soulard is not what it finds out in the county. The riverfront has open water in front of it and no shelter behind, so those addresses are sized as open ground rather than as sheltered city.

Most of the people who call us from St. Louis are hospital and university buildings, corporate and legal offices, breweries and industrial properties, hotels, parish churches, funeral homes, municipal facilities and historic-district homes.
