What we do in Salem

How tall, for a Salem building

The Capitol Mall is the one place in the state where a pole can easily be too short. 35 to 40 ft there, and the same on the Willamette University lawns, because those grounds are big enough to make anything less read as furniture. Agency buildings, the hospital campuses and the school grounds settle at 30 ft. Downtown was built to two and three storeys, so around the Reed Opera House and along Commercial Street 25 ft is about the top of what the blocks carry comfortably.

Flagpoles in Salem

The state capital, so the work here is government first: agency buildings, a university, a large hospital and the offices that serve all three. We cover Salem and the Marion and Polk counties area, including the Capitol Mall and the State Capitol grounds, Willamette University, the Oregon State Hospital campus, the Reed Opera House block downtown, Bush's Pasture Park and Gaiety Hill, the Riverfront, West Salem and the Lancaster and Kuebler corridors.

Wind here. Salem sits in an inland, flat and low-lying area, which works out to roughly 100 mph under the code your town uses. That figure decides how wide and how thick the pole has to be, so we check it against your address before we quote. Salem is where Oregon's Building Codes Division sits, and the state runs a Design Criteria Hub that returns the wind, snow and seismic figures for a given address. We look yours up there and show you what it says, rather than asking anyone to take a number on trust. The city straddles two counties, Marion on the east bank and Polk on the west, and the figure comes out the same on both sides of the bridge, so West Salem is no harder to size. Review is where the difference shows: Gaiety Hill and the downtown historic district are on the National Register, and the Historic Landmarks Commission looks at exterior work inside them, height and finish included. The valley floor here is deep silt, which is kind ground for a footing and one of the few parts of an Oregon job that costs nothing extra.

Most of the people who call us from Salem are state agency buildings, school district and community college campuses, hospitals and clinics, churches, veterans posts, downtown commercial frontage and community associations.
