Flagpoles in Alabama

Alabama runs from the Tennessee Valley down to the Gulf, and a pole that is right at one end of it is the wrong pole at the other. Pole, foundation, flag and labour come back on one quote, priced for the address rather than for the state.

Wind here. Alabama is about 330 miles top to bottom and the design wind speed climbs roughly 55 mph over that distance. Florence, Decatur and Huntsville in the Tennessee Valley sit at around 105 mph, the floor of the map. Birmingham and the central counties are near 110, Montgomery and the Black Belt near 115, Dothan and the Wiregrass near 120. Below that it climbs quickly: Brewton and Atmore are already at 135 to 140 mph, Mobile is about 155, and the beaches from Dauphin Island round to Gulf Shores reach roughly 160. From Mobile south you are at or above the highest flag-flying rating Eder publishes, so the shaft and the footing are engineered for the address rather than read off a chart. In the north half the map is the least of it: 105 mph is a straight-line figure, and what we actually specify against up there is open ground and spring storm season, not the contour on the map.

• The Tennessee Valley — Around 105 mph from Florence across to Scottsboro, and the map does not get gentler than that anywhere in the state. Wall thickness stops being the argument here. Height, finish and the halyard hardware are where the money goes.
• The central counties and the Piedmont — Around 110 mph through Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Gadsden, Anniston and Auburn. The figure barely moves across the whole band, so what changes a job here is the site: open ground, a ridge top, or a downtown block that channels wind the printed number never sees.
• The Black Belt and the Wiregrass — About 115 mph at Montgomery and Selma, about 120 at Dothan, and 125 to 130 further south around Andalusia and Monroeville. Heavy wall stops being an upgrade through here. On farm and field frontage it is the sensible opening position.
• The southern counties and the coast — The climb starts a long way inland: 135 to 140 mph at Brewton and Atmore, about 155 at Mobile, roughly 160 out on Dauphin Island and Gulf Shores. Everything from Mobile down is at or above the highest flag-flying rating Eder publishes, so we do not present a catalogue pole here as meeting a code.
