Wind here. South Carolina runs from the Blue Ridge to the Atlantic in about 250 miles, and the design wind speed climbs almost the whole way. Up at Walhalla and the Oconee County corner you are sizing to around 105 mph. On the Myrtle Beach oceanfront it reaches 150 mph, and Charleston and the barrier islands sit barely below that. The coastal plain in between is higher than a map suggests: Summerville is twenty-five miles inland from Charleston and still sizes close to 140 mph.

• The Upstate — Around 105 to 110 mph, the gentlest figures in the state. More of the budget goes into height and finish than into wall thickness.
• The Midlands and the Fall Line — Around 110 to 120 mph. A standard-wall shaft is normally correct, which keeps the cost sensible.
• The inland coastal plain — From about 120 mph at Sumter and Orangeburg to close to 140 mph at Summerville and Conway. Well inland is still coastal for sizing here, so heavy wall comes up more often than people expect.
• The Lowcountry and the Grand Strand — 140 to 150 mph, plus salt. Heavy wall or Hurricane series, and the top of that range is the top of what Eder publishes for a flag flying, so those sites are engineered one at a time.
