Flagpoles in Texas

Texas is three wind states in one, from desert at El Paso to open Gulf at Galveston. One quote covers the pole, the foundation, the flag and the labour.

Wind here. Texas covers more ground than every other state we work in, and the wind figure moves further across it than anywhere else. El Paso sizes to around 100 mph, the gentlest mapped figure we deal with. Galveston and Corpus Christi sit at about 150 mph, which is the point where a pole stops being picked off a chart and gets engineered for the address. Houston falls in between at roughly 135 mph, and the big interior cities all sit near 105. Same height of pole, three genuinely different shafts.

• The Gulf coast — Around 150 mph, and the code there assumes flying debris as well as wind. That is at or above the highest flag-flying rating Eder publishes, so the site gets engineered on its own rather than sized off a chart.
• Houston and the coastal plain — Around 135 mph, rising as you move east and south toward Galveston Bay. Heavy wall is the starting point here, not the upgrade.
• The interior cities — 100 to 110 mph. Gentle on paper, so the money goes into height rather than wall thickness, but spring downbursts are what we actually size against.
• The plains and the desert — Around 100 to 105 mph with nothing upwind for a hundred miles. Open exposure, blowing dust and hard sun, so anodized finishes earn their cost.
