Flagpoles in Colorado

Wind is only half of Colorado. Out on the plains the figure barely moves and the ground under the pole decides the job; at the foothill edge the number leaves every published rating behind. Pole, foundation, flag and labour on one quote.

Wind here. Colorado is the one state we work in where a national map is only a starting point. The mountains and the whole foothill edge are drawn as a special wind region — the part of the map where the terrain makes a printed contour meaningless, so the figure is set by the jurisdiction instead. East of that line it is settled and modest. Denver, Aurora, Fort Collins, Pueblo and Grand Junction all size to about 115 mph, and what costs money out there is the hole rather than the shaft. West of it the numbers climb quickly. Colorado Springs and El Paso County publish 130 mph, and Boulder writes 150 mph east of Broadway and 165 mph west of it into its own code amendments. 150 mph is the top of every flag-flying rating Eder publishes, so along that edge the pole and the footing are engineered for the address rather than chosen from a chart.

• The plains and the metro floor — About 115 mph from Denver and Aurora out to the Kansas line, and it hardly moves across all of that. Standard wall covers most of it. The money goes into the hole instead, because the swelling clay under the basin asks for more depth than the wind does.
• The foothill edge — From Golden and Lakewood north through Boulder to the mouth of the Poudre, the map stops printing a number and the jurisdiction sets one. Boulder's own amendments reach 165 mph on the west side of town. Anything from 150 mph up is past what Eder publishes for a flag flying, so on this edge pole, footing and flag are settled as one thing for one address, and nothing comes off a height chart.
• The Pikes Peak region and the south — A flat 130 mph across Colorado Springs and El Paso County, with Exposure C required everywhere, so no shaft gets credit for shelter from trees or nearby buildings. Pueblo, an hour south, drops back to about 115 mph and is the easiest sizing on the southern Front Range.
• The mountains and the Western Slope — Valley floors from Glenwood Springs to Durango size close to the Grand Junction figure; the passes and the ridgelines above them do not, and those are looked up one address at a time. Sun and ground decide most of this work. A mill finish chalks fast at altitude, and shale and irrigated orchard soil both want the footing thought about before the pole is.
