Flagpoles in Utah

The Wasatch Front stacks campuses, city buildings and temple grounds against a mountain wall, and St. George in the far south is another climate altogether. One quote carries the pole, the footing, the flag and the labour.

Wind here. Utah's mapped wind figures barely move. Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo and Park City all size to about 115 mph, the whole Salt Lake Valley floor with them, and only St. George in the far south-west comes down to around 105. So the map is not what decides a Utah pole. The canyons are. Ogden, Weber, Provo, Parleys and Emigration all open onto the cities below them and send a downslope wind out of the east that no contour describes, which is why exposure is settled at the address rather than at the city limit. After that it is snow load off the state study, seismic detailing on the Wasatch fault, and in the south-west, heat and blowing sand.

• The Wasatch Front cities — About 115 mph on the map from Ogden through Salt Lake City to Provo, and the canyon mouths on the east side are not inside that figure. Heavy wall on anything standing above the last street, on a block sunk past a 30 inch frost line.
• The valley floor — The same 115 mph out west of the Jordan River. What changes across the valley floor is not the number but the ground: deep lake sediment instead of rock, so the block goes wider rather than the shaft thicker.
• The Wasatch Back and the high country — 115 mph at Park City, at close to 7,000 feet, with the ground snow load taken off the state study rather than a single number. Wind is the smaller half of it. Rope and cleat freeze solid up here, so stainless hardware and an internal halyard with a winch.
• The southern desert — About 105 mph around St. George, on a 12 inch frost line instead of 30, so the hole is the shallowest in the state. Heat, sun and blowing sand set the specification instead, which means anodized rather than mill finish.
