Wind here. Connecticut is about a hundred miles wide and does not make you read the figure off a map. The state code lists a design wind speed for every one of the 169 towns, and across the whole list it moves about fifteen mph. The northwest hill towns are the bottom of it, Norfolk, Salisbury and North Canaan at 115 mph. Everything from Greenwich along the shore to Bridgeport sits at 120, and so do Hartford and Waterbury inland. The figure then climbs eastward rather than seaward: 125 at New Haven and along the Saybrook and Old Lyme shore, and about 130 at Groton and the Stonington corner. That catches people out. Long Island lies square across the western Sound while the eastern end opens on the ocean, so Greenwich sizes no higher than the capital. We look the town figure up for the address before anything is quoted. With a range that narrow the site decides the pole far more often than the list does, and here the site means ledge, snow, salt and old fill.

• The northwest hills — 115 mph through Norfolk, Salisbury and North Canaan, the bottom of the state list. Snow is the load that moves up here instead. Ground snow, the weight of settled snow the code makes you design for, is 40 pounds a square foot in these towns against 30 on the shoreline. The list gives a town, not a hilltop, so an open ridge above Norfolk is priced on what is actually standing round it.
• Hartford, Waterbury and the inland towns — 120 mph, the same figure the Fairfield shore carries, which makes a standard-wall shaft normally correct from the Connecticut valley through the Naugatuck. What changes inland is not the wind but what is under the pole: soft clay on the valley floor, mill fill along the rivers, and ledge close to the surface once the ground starts to rise. The hole is where an inland quote moves, not the shaft.
• The Fairfield County shoreline — A flat 120 mph from the New York line through Greenwich and Stamford to Norwalk and Bridgeport, no higher than Hartford, because Long Island stands across this end of the Sound. Salt decides the specification here rather than wall thickness, so the finish and the fittings are where a Fairfield County quote goes up.
• New Haven east to Stonington — 125 mph at New Haven and along the Saybrook and Old Lyme shore, and about 130 at Groton, Mystic and Stonington, the top of the state list. Heavy wall starts to earn its place, and the salt strengthens with the wind as the Sound opens on the ocean.
