Wind here. Connecticut is about a hundred miles wide, and Eder's wind map crosses it in two bands. Hartford, Waterbury and the inland towns sit at 100 mph, and the northwest hill towns, Norfolk, Salisbury and North Canaan, read no higher. The shoreline from Greenwich through Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport to New Haven is one band up, at 110. East of New Haven the chart climbs toward the Rhode Island figures, so a Saybrook, Groton or Stonington address is read off the map one at a time before anything is quoted. The state code also lists its own figure for each of the 169 towns, and that is the number an engineer checks when a permit is filed. With a range that narrow the site decides the pole far more often than the map does, and here the site means ledge, snow, salt and old fill.

• The northwest hills — 100 mph or below on Eder's chart through Norfolk, Salisbury and North Canaan, the bottom of the state. Snow is the load that moves up here instead. Ground snow, the weight of settled snow the code makes you design for, is 40 pounds a square foot in these towns against 30 on the shoreline. The map gives a band, not a hilltop, so an open ridge above Norfolk is priced on what is actually standing round it.
• Hartford, Waterbury and the inland towns — 100 mph on Eder's wind map, one band below the Fairfield shore, which makes a standard-wall shaft normally correct from the Connecticut valley through the Naugatuck. What changes inland is not the wind but what is under the pole: soft clay on the valley floor, mill fill along the rivers, and ledge close to the surface once the ground starts to rise. The hole is where an inland quote moves, not the shaft.
• The Fairfield County shoreline — A flat 110 mph on Eder's chart from the New York line through Greenwich and Stamford to Norwalk and Bridgeport. Long Island stands across this end of the Sound, so salt decides the specification here rather than wall thickness, and the finish and the fittings are where a Fairfield County quote goes up.
• New Haven east to Stonington — 110 mph at New Haven on Eder's chart, and higher past the Saybrook and Old Lyme shore toward Groton, Mystic and Stonington, the top of the state. Heavy wall starts to earn its place, and the salt strengthens with the wind as the Sound opens on the ocean.
