Wind here. New Jersey is flat on the wind map until you reach the water. From the Sussex County hills in the northwest down through Trenton and Camden the design wind speed sits close to 115 mph, so inland sizing barely changes from one end of the state to the other. It climbs going south along the shore: around 120 mph at Toms River and out on Long Beach Island, and around 125 mph by the time you reach Atlantic City and Cape May at the bottom of the state. Salt comes with those shore figures, and it changes the finish as much as the wind changes the wall.

• The northwest hills — Around 115 mph across Sussex, Warren and Morris, with workable ground under most of it. Ridgelines and gaps run higher than the map and get looked at one by one.
• The Newark and Hudson corridor — Around 115 mph on the map, plus channelling between towers and open harbour frontage that no map shows.
• The central and southern interior — Around 115 mph from Princeton down through Camden and the Pine Barrens. Standard wall is usually right, on a wider footing than clay would need.
• The shore and the barrier islands — 120 to 125 mph, with salt on top of it. Heavy wall or Hurricane series, and anodized as the default rather than the upgrade.
