Flagpoles in Illinois

Wind here. Illinois runs nearly four hundred miles from the Wisconsin line to the Ohio River, and the design wind speed hardly moves across any of it. Chicago writes its own figure into its own construction code, 107 mph for an ordinary building, and the rest of the state sits close to that, so about 105 mph covers Illinois. The map is therefore not what decides a pole here. Exposure is: a street between Loop towers and a school on the edge of a bean field carry the same number on paper and behave nothing alike. Below ground it is frost and water, because the footing has to go under the frost line and Chicago puts that at 42 inches. There is no single statewide building code either. Each town adopts its own, and since January 2025 the state requires that to be a model code from the last ten years, so the edition your permit is written against changes from one county line to the next.

• Chicago and the lakefront — The city sets its own number, 107 mph, and it tells you less here than anywhere else in Illinois. Downtown the wind is bent by the buildings; on open lake frontage there is nothing to bend it. Both take wall thickness rather than height, and both take hardware that still works in February.
• The collar counties and the Fox Valley — Sheltered suburban ground, where a standard wall is normally right. Rock is what moves the price out here: this is old quarry country, and where the dolomite comes up shallow the hole is cut instead of drilled.
• The prairie counties — The same 105 mph, over ground with nothing in front of it for miles and no rock anywhere near the surface. Open exposure and a wet hole push the same way, so the wall and the footing grow while the height stays sensible.
• The river valleys and the south — From the bluffs above the Illinois River down to the Ohio. Valley floors are genuinely sheltered and bluff tops are not, so a site with a view is sized on its own rather than off a county figure.
