South Dakota is open country from the Big Sioux to the Black Hills, and most sites here have nothing upwind of them. Pole, foundation, flag and labour on one quote.

Wind here. South Dakota is about 380 miles wide and the wind map hardly moves across it. Roughly 110 mph through the east at Sioux Falls, Brookings and Aberdeen; roughly 115 mph along the Missouri and on west toward the Black Hills. One step on the chart in 380 miles, so the map is not what separates one job here from another. Exposure is. Outside the Hills and the river breaks very little stands upwind of anything, so we size for open ground rather than off the contour, and confirm what your own town enforces before we quote. Then the frost decides the hole, and in this state it goes deeper than the load on the pole would ever ask for on its own.

• The Black Hills and the west — Around 115 mph on the map, and the map is the least of it here. A ridge, a gap or a shoulder above Spearfish, Lead or Custer runs faster than the valley floor beneath it, and that is a Black Hills problem no contour has a way to show.
• The Missouri corridor — Around 115 mph from Mobridge down through Pierre and Chamberlain, open bluff with the river cut below it. Underneath is Pierre Shale, which swells as it takes up water and shrinks back as it dries, so the footing has to reach past the layer that moves.
• The eastern prairie and the I-29 corridor — Around 110 mph through Sioux Falls, Brookings and Watertown. A sheltered town lot can take a standard wall. Frontage out on the open corridor cannot, and is priced as open ground whatever the contour says.
• The northern lake plain — Around 110 mph across Aberdeen and the James valley, on the flat bed of a glacial lake. The silt and clay there hold water rather than shed it, so the hole is drained before any concrete goes into it.
