Wind here. The wind map barely moves across Missouri. From about 110 mph in the northwest corner around St. Joseph down to about 105 mph at Caruthersville in the Bootheel is five mph across roughly 375 miles, and every town on this page sits inside it. So the map is not what sizes a pole here. The ground is: deep glacial till north of the Missouri River, dolomite and limestone close under the Ozarks south of it, made ground along both big rivers. Exposure is the rest, because thunderstorm outflow crossing open country loads a shaft far harder than a sheltered street does. • North of the Missouri River — Around 110 mph, and the northwest corner is the top of the state. Glacial till runs deep up here and the digging is usually easy, so what you pay for is the height you want rather than a heavier shaft.
• The two metros — Kansas City and St. Louis both size to around 110 mph, which is the easy part. Tight sites, historic-district review and footings over made ground or a parking deck are what actually cost money.
• The Ozarks and the southwest — Around 105 to 110 mph. Thin soil over dolomite, so the hole is the variable rather than the shaft, and a ridge top or a lake front behaves nothing like the valley town below it.
• The southeast and the Bootheel — Around 105 mph, the lowest numbers on the Missouri map. Flat alluvial ground with nothing upwind, so a wider footing and open-terrain sizing matter here more than wall thickness does.
