Flagpoles in North Dakota

Fargo offices, the Capitol grounds at Bismarck, two air force bases and a few hundred miles of open farmland between them. One quote covers the pole, the concrete it stands in, the flag and the labour.

Wind here. North Dakota is about 340 miles wide and the wind figure does not move across it. Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot all size to about 110 mph, and so does every small town in between. That is a moderate number, so the map is not what decides a pole here. Exposure is, because open ground is the default rather than the exception. The hole is, because every footing goes below a northern frost line. And the cold is, because it sets the hardware long before the wind does. One more thing worth knowing before anything is drawn: the state code is the International codes, on the 2024 editions since January 2026, but only the cities, counties and townships that have taken it on enforce it, so who reviews the job depends on the address.

• The Red River valley — About 110 mph, over the flattest ground in the country. A moderate figure normally buys height rather than wall thickness, but nothing shelters anything down here, so we size for open exposure on almost every job and the heavier wall comes back anyway.
• The Drift Prairie and Devils Lake country — The same 110 mph from Devils Lake across to Rugby, so the shaft does not change. The hole does. The footing has to sit under the frost line, the local building department sets that depth, and we want it in writing before the concrete is ordered.
• The Missouri plateau and the west — Still about 110 mph through Bismarck, Dickinson and Williston. What is different out here is what a year does to a finish and to cloth: long sun, grit off dry ground, and no shelter from either. Anodized rather than satin mill, and expect to replace flags sooner than you would further east.
• The river valleys and the coulees — The Souris at Minot, the Missouri below Bismarck, the Sheyenne, and the draws through the Badlands. A valley floor genuinely is sheltered and the rim above it is not, so two addresses a mile apart can take different shafts at the same 110 mph.
