Flagpoles in Indiana

Statehouse and motorsport at Indianapolis, campuses at Bloomington and South Bend, steel and open water at Gary, and farm ground between all of it. One quote covers the pole, the foundation, the flag and the labour.

Wind here. Indiana does not argue with itself on a wind map. The state residential code prints one design wind speed, 115 mph, against every one of the 92 counties, from the Ohio River bank at Tell City to the Steuben County corner past Fort Wayne, and the commercial map Indiana adopts gives the same figure. So the number is settled before anyone rings us, and it is not what tells one address apart from another. Three other things do. The state is flat and mostly open, so a field, a business park lawn or a distribution yard has nothing upwind of it and gets sized as exposed however quiet it looks. The northern tier lies under the Lake Michigan snowbelt, where wet snow and freezing rain load the flag and the halyard hardware in a way no wind figure describes. And the ground changes completely down the length of the state: dune sand on the lakefront, heavy lakebed clay east of Fort Wayne, stiff glacial till through the middle, limestone and sinkholes under Bloomington, river alluvium at Evansville.

• The Ohio River counties — The same 115 mph as everywhere else, so the map is no help in choosing here. Water and slope are. A floodway address answers to the state before it answers to the town, and the Knobs above New Albany do not behave like the valley floor underneath them.
• The central till plain — Stiff glacial till from Terre Haute through Indianapolis across to Richmond, and it holds a footing as well as any ground we work on. That is where the saving is in central Indiana: an ordinary hole, an ordinary pour, and the money goes into the pole and the flag instead.
• The Lake Michigan shore — Gary, Portage and Michigan City look north up the length of open water, standing on dune sand rather than till. Fresh water, so the case for an anodized finish is blowing sand and not salt, and the footing goes wider than the figure alone would ask.
• The northeast and the snowbelt — From South Bend across to Angola the winter does the work the wind does not. Lake-effect snow and freezing rain sit on the flag and the halyard hardware for months, so stainless fittings and a winch inside the shaft stop being upgrades and start being the point.
