Wind here. Wind is the flat part of a Kentucky job. The state runs its residential code on the 2015 IRC, and that map puts every one of the 120 counties at the same 115 mph, so Covington up on the Ohio and Bowling Green down near the Tennessee line size to one figure. What decides the work here is underneath. Two broad limestone belts cross the state, the Inner Bluegrass around Lexington and the sinkhole plain around Bowling Green and the cave country, and limestone dissolves. • The Inner Bluegrass and the Ohio River cities — 115 mph, on the most sheltered ground in the state. Standard wall is normally the right answer around Lexington, Frankfort and Louisville, so what you are buying is height and finish rather than a heavier shaft.
• The Pennyroyal and the sinkhole plain — 115 mph again, and the shaft is not where the money goes. Around Bowling Green, Elizabethtown and the cave country the foundation is settled after somebody has been into the ground, and that is the line on the quote that moves.
• The eastern coal field and the ridges — 115 mph on the valley floors, and the map stops being much use once you are up on a ridge line or in a gap. Exposed ground up there gets a heavier wall than the flat figure asks for, worked out address by address.
• The western counties and the Ohio bottoms — 115 mph across open farm ground with nothing upwind of it for miles, so those sites are sized as exposed rather than sheltered. The far west sits near the New Madrid fault as well, and the earthquake requirements that come with it are answered in the reinforcement and the width of the footing, not in the pole.
