Flagpoles in Mississippi

Mississippi runs from the Memphis line down to open Gulf water. For most of that distance Eder's wind map does not move at all, and what varies instead is the ground.

Wind here. Mississippi is about 340 miles from the Tennessee line to the Gulf, and for the first two hundred of them Eder's wind map sits flat at 90 mph. Southaven, Oxford, Greenville, Jackson, Meridian: the same number. It starts to climb in the Pine Belt, reaches 120 mph at Hattiesburg, and runs to 150 mph on the beach through Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula. That is the top band on Eder's chart, and Eder's Hurricane series is rated to 150 mph with the flag flying, which matches it; coastal addresses get the Hurricane pole by default, confirmed for the address. North of the Pine Belt the pole itself is seldom what makes a job difficult. The hole is, because the ground changes far more than the wind does: loess in DeSoto County, deep river silt in the Delta, expansive clay under Jackson, chalk out on the Black Prairie.

• The north and the Delta — A flat 90 mph from Southaven and Corinth across to Clarksdale and Greenville, the same baseline figure most of the country inland works to. Standard wall does the work, so the budget goes into height, finish and hardware. What varies is underfoot: silt bluffs in the hills, deep soft river ground in the Delta.
• The middle of the state — Still 90 mph through Jackson, Vicksburg and Meridian. The figure has not moved in two hundred miles, so on a lot of this ground it is the clay under the hole, not the shaft above it, that sets what a job costs.
• The Pine Belt — About 110 mph at Laurel and 120 at Hattiesburg and Columbia. This is the band that catches people out: seventy miles from the beach and already well past what the word inland suggests, so heavier wall starts coming into the conversation.
• The southern counties and the coast — Around 130 mph at Picayune and Poplarville, 130 to 140 at Wiggins and Lucedale, and 150 mph on the beach itself, the top band on Eder's chart. Eder's Hurricane series is rated to 150 mph with the flag flying, which matches it, so Hurricane series, anodized finish, and a footing designed for the address.
