Flagpoles in Mississippi

Mississippi runs from the Memphis line down to open Gulf water. For most of that distance the design wind speed does not move at all, and what varies instead is the ground. One quote covers the pole, the foundation, the flag and the labour.

Wind here. Mississippi is about 340 miles from the Tennessee line to the Gulf, and for the first two hundred of them the wind figure sits flat at roughly 115 mph. Southaven, Oxford, Greenville, Jackson, Meridian: the same number. It starts to climb in the Pine Belt, reaches around 130 mph at Hattiesburg, and runs to about 155 mph on the beach through Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula. That last figure is above the highest flag-flying rating Eder publishes, so a coastal address is engineered as its own job. North of the Pine Belt the pole itself is seldom what makes a job difficult. The hole is, because the ground changes far more than the wind does: loess in DeSoto County, deep river silt in the Delta, expansive clay under Jackson, chalk out on the Black Prairie.

• The north and the Delta — A flat 115 mph from Southaven and Corinth across to Clarksdale and Greenville, the same baseline figure most of the country inland works to. Standard wall does the work, so the budget goes into height, finish and hardware. What varies is underfoot: silt bluffs in the hills, deep soft river ground in the Delta.
• The middle of the state — Still 115 mph through Jackson, Vicksburg and Meridian. The figure has not moved in two hundred miles, so on a lot of this ground it is the clay under the hole, not the shaft above it, that sets what a job costs.
• The Pine Belt — About 125 mph at Laurel, 130 at Hattiesburg and closer to 135 down at Columbia. This is the band that catches people out: seventy miles from the beach and already well past what the word inland suggests, so heavier wall starts coming into the conversation.
• The southern counties and the coast — Around 140 mph at Picayune and Poplarville, 145 at Wiggins and Lucedale, and about 155 mph on the beach itself. The beachfront is above the top of every flag-flying rating Eder publishes, so Hurricane series, anodized finish, and a footing engineered for the address rather than sized off a chart.
