Wind here. Oklahoma is the unusual case where the wind map barely moves across the state. Lawton in the southwest, Oklahoma City in the middle and Tulsa in the northeast all size to about 105 mph, so the figure is not what makes one job here different from another. Two other things are. Exposure first: a pole on open ground west of Edmond carries far more load than the same pole on a sheltered downtown block in Tulsa. Then ice, which arrives most winters and loads every pole in the state at once. One wrinkle is worth knowing before you budget. Oklahoma enforces a single statewide code, adopted in 2021, and the wind map bound into that edition is an older one reading 115 mph rather than the current 105. We check which of the two your building office works to before anything is quoted.

• Oklahoma City and the central corridor — About 105 mph from Edmond through the city and down to Norman. Moore rewrote its residential code after 2013 and now builds houses to 135 mph, the first city in the country to do it — a house standard, not a pole rating, but it tells you how the ground is judged here. What you buy is decided by the building and by the hole, not by the map.
• Tulsa and the northeast — The same 105 mph, on rolling ground with real tree cover. Two local things matter more than the figure: historic preservation zoning across the older neighbourhoods, which puts the job in front of the Tulsa Preservation Commission, and freezing rain, which is what actually costs money up here. Settle the hardware before the shaft.
• The southwest and Fort Sill country — Still about 105 mph around Lawton and Altus, but with nothing upwind for miles the shaft works harder than the number suggests. Wall thickness does the work the map will not, and the concrete widens with it. North of Lawton the Wichita Mountains put granite under the hole.
• The open country in between — 105 mph on a section road the same as on a downtown corner, with nothing to break it. The tornado question belongs here, and the answer is short: the building code does not size ordinary structures for tornadoes, and no flagpole carries a tornado rating. The one 250 mph figure in the codes belongs to the storm shelter standard, which puts all of Oklahoma in its top zone. That number is for a shelter and for nothing else.
