Flagpoles in Louisiana

North Louisiana sizes gently. South of Alexandria the figure climbs fast, and in the bayou parishes it reaches the top of everything Eder publishes for a flag flying and then goes past it. Pole, concrete, flag and labour on one quote either way.

Wind here. Shreveport and Monroe sit at about 105 mph, and the figure barely moves across the northern parishes. It is near 110 at Alexandria, then it climbs: Baton Rouge around 125, Lafayette and Lake Charles around 130, Metairie about 140, New Orleans about 145. Houma is 150, and the parishes below it keep rising to roughly 165 at Grand Isle and Port Fourchon. 150 mph is the top of every flag-flying rating Eder publishes, so from Houma south the shaft and its footing are engineered for that one address and nothing stock is described as passing. The second half of the job is what the concrete sits in, which goes from firm terrace ground at Baton Rouge to sinking delta clay two hours downriver. Louisiana runs one construction code for the whole state, so it is the address, not the parish line, that settles the pole.

• The northern parishes — About 105 mph from Shreveport across to Monroe, and it holds the whole way. Wall thickness is rarely the question up here. Ice on the flag and on the rope is, so the hardware matters more than the shaft does.
• Central Louisiana and the capital — Around 110 mph at Alexandria, about 125 at Baton Rouge. An ordinary shaft wall still does the work. Coming south, the hole in the ground starts to cost more than the pole standing in it.
• Acadiana and the southwest — About 130 mph at Lafayette and Lake Charles, and higher again below both, toward Vermilion Bay and the Calcasieu ship channel. Heavy wall from the outset, and anodized instead of a bare mill finish anywhere brackish water reaches.
• The delta and the bayou parishes — Metairie about 140, New Orleans about 145, Houma 150, roughly 165 by the time you reach Grand Isle. Everything Eder publishes for a flag flying stops at 150 mph, so from Houma down no pole is offered as passing a code. Those addresses are engineered one at a time, on anodized shafts with stainless hardware.
